Sky Box Sounds vol. 23 | ANTI - Rihanna

For months now, style/music icon, Rihanna, has been dropping hints about her upcoming album ANTI without a promise of a release date. However, scheduling and announcing a world tour was an indication to fans that it wouldn't be long before it would be available.

Can we first just talk about the cover artwork? Commissioned by art extraordinaire, Roy Nachum, this album cover immediately caught my attention. It's disturbing, beautiful, symbolic, as well as thought provoking, which alone is a decent summary of the misunderstood star, Rihanna, has become over the past decade. After conducting a little research, I discovered that this was also apart of Nachum's "Blind" series that pretty much conceptualizes the idea of inner and outer vision and the collaboration of both worlds in our creativity. Knowing how much went into the very details, set the tone for how I perceived ANTI before I even had the chance to hear it.

Although I would have organized the tracks a little differently, the overall production of this album was executed flawlessly. It sounded like a combination of every project Rihanna has every been a part of thus far; at the same time, it seems like a pretty accurate reflection of her growth and development as an artist.

My favorite songs are Consideration (ft. Sza), Work (ft. Drake), Close to You, and Kiss it Better. To my surprise, Rihanna and Sza's voices mesh really well together. Work is a feel good song with a dancehall inspired backdrop. I think the lyrics are really cute and Drake's verse is the icing on the cake.  Close to You is a nice R&B love ballad, which was something I wasn't expecting. The best part about Kiss it Better are the instruments that accompany this track. I wouldn't necessarily consider it a favorite, the bass line on Woo is absolutely dope.

Ms. Robyn and her team did an incredible job on this one. With big names such as Timbaland, Antydote, Matthew Samuels, and many more to name on the production side, it would be hard to believe that it was lacking at all in quality. I hope they receive all the recognition and success she deserves.

Have you heard ANTI yet? What do you think?
