Bae vs. Basketball: The Girlfriend's Playbook to Surviving Playoff SZN

In light of NBA playoff season, I've created a fun, go-to guide to help the girls, especially the ones who live or spend long periods of time with a s/o, who want to play a role in something her man spends most of his time enjoying and to to feel a little less dismissed/ignored during the whirlwind of playoff season. On days when no one else is available to hang out with and all you want to do is spend time with your man while the game is on, this fun little playbook is designed to help you out a bit.
{Disclaimer: It's important to note that I don't mean to offend anyone, so feel free to not take this post too seriously. Everyone is free to switch genders/gender roles, as well as pick apart the points in this post according to how they personally see fit. The goal is to bring people closer together or-at the very least-make someone laugh. This is just free, unsolicited advice from the perspective of a sports savvy diva.}

Before we go any further, allow me to give you a very brief run down of major post-season playoff dates for basketball, football, and baseball. Please note that they all end with a finals series, as well as a final game, but we'll get to that:

  • NBA {current}: April 15th-May 16th
    • May 14th: conference finals begin
    • May 16th: NBA Draft Lottery
    • June 1st: NBA Finals begins, end date varies
  • NFL{2018}: January 6th-February 4th (SB LII)
  • MLB {2016}: October 5th-October 25th

Games are pretty much broken down into a best of 7 series and conclude with an annual grand finale at the conclusion of the season, such as the Super Bowl, which is typically fun for everybody. Baseball has the World Series circa early November and a NBA championship game is held in the summer for basketball. Exact dates for these final competitions vary per sport, but usually occur around the same time each year.

Now, I know this is not a lot of information, but for the sake of time, let's continue with a really simple 4-step guide to surviving playoff SZN.

If I have your attention...

...and you're still intrigued. Fantastic! And fortunately this is not click bait.

#1. Choosing a team

It's pretty easy to keep it cute and go with the flow of the team bae is rooting for, but who doesn't love a little challenge? Do some quick research, learn a few facts, find a team you like, and go with that one. To spice things up, intentionally choose a team that's a known rival to his team. For instance, if he's a die hard Los Angeles Lakers fan, go for the Boston Celtics (who, btw, are currently one of the top teams in the NBA playoffs at the moment and will face the Washington Wizards in Game 7 tonight at 8pm; ET *Update: Boston won and will move on to the next round of the playoffs, Eastern Conference Finals). Study your new favorite team closely. When it's game time, you'll have plenty of ammunition for a harmless battle between a house divided.

tip: On game day, instead of wearing his old and worn Philadelphia Eagles jersey, rock another team's jersey or colors instead, curl up on your favorite spot on the couch next to him and say, "Babe, I think I'd rather root for [insert team name] today," with a Coca-Cola smile. If he inquires, you'll have a few 'well, actually facts' to back you least for the moment. If this is likely start an argument, please disregard this tip and refer to #2. If you are the gf/wife of a professional athlete who just so happened to stumble across this blog, also disregard.

#2. Teamwork makes the dream work!

Now that you've done your research and chosen a team, it turns out you do actually like the team your boo roots for. I'd say it makes life a whole lot easier from here. This is a great way to pick his brain a little; learn the rules of the game, how to talk shit, about historical significance of the game, and more in general about the team that's now a common favorite. Who knows? You may even hear some really cool stories about his childhood + adolescent years that would've never come up without the mention of his favorite teams, making it easier for him to open up.

#3. Make it fun for yourself

Always Brave
Exhibit A.

Up to this point, sports haven't exactly been your cup of tea, so what is it that you like to do? What are your hobbies? For instance, if you're into fashion + style, find different ways to style looks that are comfortable, cute, and sports friendly and wear it out somewhere like a sports bar {see 'exhibit A' above}. If you make regular trips to the nail salon, choose a look based on your new favorite teams' colors. If you're into cooking, volunteer to make some game day favorites, such as wings, tacos, pizza, etc. for you two to enjoy together. There are so many different ways to make this experiment super fun for you and the man in your life. Find ways you connect and make it look sexy!

#4. If none of these work out for you...

Use this time to be productive, even if you don't necessarily fall under the independent woman archetype. Pull out your laptop, select a dope play list to listen to, turn up the volume in your earbuds, and get things done while the game is on. Work on that project you've been putting off for the past few months. Read a book. Get some studying done, in the case that you are a student. Although these are things that can be done in the same room, who says you have to be up under your man 24/7? Conquer some fitness goals and use this as gym time. If you're anything like me and you thoroughly enjoy the simplicity of being in his company, there's nothing wrong with that, because I'm sure he loves you regardless. He'll come around and he probably secretly wants you to participate, so give it a shot...and exchange kisses every time your team scores a point...or gets a touchdown...or hits a home-run (lol).

And there you have it, ladies!!!

Nothing too complicated here, just something to hopefully enhance your relationship with the sports enthusiast you call boyfriend, husband, fiance, etc. We're in the midst one of the best times in professional basketball and with fall creeping up right around the corner, NFL season will be here soon enough, so summer should be plenty of time to scuffle through team archives to find a good fit. Happy hunting!
