Tidal Wave Wednesdays no.8 | NBA Free Agency...What's Next? + June Recap

Tidal Wave Wednesdays are finally back and I am fully aware that I have been slacking big time. there's obviously so much that hasn't been covered on The Sky Box Suite as of lately, so let's get right to it, shall we?

  • The new boys officially signed contracts with their respective teams and this summer the rookies were able to show off more of their skills against second year players during summer league, which began July 1. There isn't always much to be said about summer games, at least not from my POV, but it is a good way for coaches to gauge which areas each player dominates in and which ones need improvement.
  • Just for the record, I respect that Lonzo Ball is apart of #LakerNation now and summer league MVP, but I refuse to refer to him as "the face of the Lakers", despite how much Papa Ball hypes his name and promotes the BBB brand. I am, however, more than willing to give him a chance to prove himself come regular season.

Moving on to what the heck is going on with the free agency...

  • There's been some talk of GSW snooping around Los Angeles to pick up Nick Young. If that is the case, it's not really necessary for them to pick up anyone new, considering the level they've been able to play at these last few seasons.
  • A few smart moves have been made in terms of NBA trade. Boston Celtics pick up Gordon Hayward, Detroit Pistons replaced Marcus Morris with Avery Bradley, and Houston Rockets add Chris Paul.
  • Kyrie Irving wants to leave Cleveland, which is a story I'm personally confused by. It doesn't really add up, especially considering where the Cavs are as a team. Is the concern about career stability or simply not wanting to live in the shadow of fellow teammate, Lebron James. It's not the smartest move in my opinion, he may end up moving on to 1/3 teams that he hopes to go to nor a team that has whatever he's looking for. It would probably be best for him to at least consider pushing through one more season with the Cavs and just choose to not resign, but something tells me it's not that black and white.
  • It's been confirmed that D. Rose signed a one-year deal with Cleveland. For whatever reason, I still think Rose is an effective player with star quality, but it's really been a whirlwind for him since circa 2011.
  • In the midst of the constant commotion and mayhem of off-season trades, there are still quite a few free agents left who are awaiting their fate, such as Nikola Mirotic, Carmelo Anthony, and Javale McGee, to name a few.
