DUAL PERSPECTIVES | Top 8 NFL Receiving Corps: pt. I
/One of the best aspects of professional football is watching how each team’s receiving corps operates on the field. No matter how many times football fans watch a smooth throw from the Quarterback in the pocket to his Wide Receiver, it’s new and thrilling every time and it’s ultimately what makes this game so special. Today, I will be going into detail about 4 teams that have the best receiving corp this season. Later this week, the editor-in-chief herself will comeback with her top 4 for part II of this debate.
New England Patriots
QB – Tom Brady
Receiving Corp —Julian Edelman, Phillip Dorsett II, Antonio Brown, Josh Gordon
On paper, this is probably the best QB/Receiving corp in the league. You have Edelman, one of the best slot receivers in the game. Phillip Dorsett II is a young receiver who has already proved to be a end zone threat (2 TD so far this season). You have Josh Gordon, a super talented receiver who finally looks to have put his issues behind him. And I don’t know if you’ve guys have noticed, the Patriots scooped up Antonio Brown, who for all the headaches he has caused, is a sure-fire Hall of Famer one day. Oh and the guy throwing them the ball? The G.O.A.T. himself, Tom Brady. The Patriots should have no issues putting up points this season (look at what they did to the Miami Dolphins week 2).
UPDATE: Yeah so that Antonio Brown thing didn’t work out.
Houston Texans
QB — Deshaun Watson
Receiving Corp — DeAndre Hopkins, Will Fuller V, Jordan Akins, Jordan Thomas
Houston has always been a team that’s been on the cusp of being great but for whatever reason, they haven’t quite put it all together. An injury seems to always put them out of contention during the season. Deshaun Watson is coming back from an injury and looks to continue his upward trend toward elite status in the league. Along for the ride is DeAndre Hopkins, who many considered after last year, the best wide receiver in football. WFV is a solid receiver who will benefit from the attention Hopkins gets and the Jordans (Thomas is currently on the IR) provides big targets. But as with all Houston seasons, their effectiveness will depend on health.
Cleveland Browns
QB — Baker Mayfield
Receiving Corp — Jarvis Landry, Odell Beckham Jr, Pharaoh Brown, Demetrius Harris
No team came in with more expectations and hype than the Cleveland Browns. I can’t remember the last time anyone was ever truly hyped for the Cleveland Browns. But with such young and amazing talent, they were not only pegged as a potentially good team but Super Bowl contenders. Early bumps have tempered those goals but there’s no doubt this team has the pieces. Baker Mayfield, for every bit of controversy he can conjure up, is a legitimate star who, when clicking, can get down field in a hurry. He’s definitely aided by two of the best Pro Bowl wide receivers in the game in Landry and OBJ, both being big time threats at any given moment. Brown and Harris round out a squad that if their potential is reached, could eventually make some noise.
Kansas City Chiefs
QB — Patrick Mahomes
Receiving Corp — Tyreek Hill, Sammy Watkins, Demarcus Robinson, Travis Kelce
There’s no way you can talk about best QB/Receivers combinations without bringing up the reigning, defending MVP of the league, Patrick Mahomes. He tore the league apart last year and has looked just as impressive this year. He boasts arguably the best TE in the game in Travis Kelce. One could argue Sammy Watkins had underperformed up until this year but he has been putting on a clinic in the early parts of the season, playing at a high level and is among the best receivers in the league. Tyreek Hill is currently out and has been in some ugly stories this offseason but his talent is undeniable. Demarcus Robinson plays the under-the-radar receiver and he has benefited greatly thus far this year. Kansas City, along with the Patriots, are the only unbeatens left and with their offenses, it is no hard to see why!
