I was sitting in my room on a Friday night when the video for Missy Elliott’s new single, Throw it Back, showed up on my timeline. There I was, excited to play what I knew would be a gem of a music video. Eyes glued to my laptop screen, I could sense a surge of nostalgia from my pre-teen years, my heart tickled with anticipated energy, anxious to catch the latest videos on MTV after school. I didn’t even expect to post anything music related until this weekend, but when as soon as I saw the video, I just had to make some slight adjustments to the content that was previously planned.
A vet in the game, undefeated in both creativity and choreography, and a swag that is truly unmatched when it comes to style, the extraordinary, oh so talented, Melissa “Missy” Elliott graces the scene once again to prove that she hasn’t lost it. As someone who is a long time fan, I’ve always been inspired by Missy’s confidence in the realm of artistry and self-expression. What I admire the most is how she is constantly carving out her own path and has never been afraid to stand out or be different. I’m also so impressed by her ability to bring together a team of people who know how to execute her visions flawlessly. It was icing on the cake for Teyana Taylor to be in the video, because I know how much inspiration she draws from Missy as well and I’m inspired by them both.
According to a recent statement made by Joshua Espinoza at Complex.com, she will be honored during the annual Video Music Awards:
“Missy will be presented with the Video Vanguard Award during the VMAs ceremony airing this Monday on MTV.”
And it’s certainly well-deserved. Her flowers, her crown, her accolades are due.
